The 2014 Tronquoy-Lalande has a crisp, graphite and black fruit nose, tightly wound with very fine precision. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, plenty of graphite, and cedar infusing the black fruit, although I find the finish just a little clipped and lacking a little finesse compared to some of the other Saint Estèphes. Still, this has good potential, even if it is destined to remain in the shadow of its sibling, the 2014 Montrose.

Château Tronquoy-Lalande, situated in the heart of the appellation, is one of the oldest Saint-Estèphe wines. It takes its name from François Tronquoy, the estate’s first owner, and the place-name La Lande, meaning the heath, on which the Château’s historic vineyard is planted.

In 2006, Martin and Olivier Bouygues discovered this little gem only a few months after acquiring Château Montrose, its illustrious neighbour. On specialist advice, they decided to buy the property, marking the start of a new era in its history. They then embarked on a large-scale modernisation programme which culminated in 2010 with the construction of a vast barrel hall and a new vat house equipped with a vertical press and 22 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats.

Four different grape varieties are used to make the premium red wine, Château Tronquoy-Lalande: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Each one has a particular role to play, enhancing the others and bringing roundness or density, aroma and flavour or length.
