TASTING NOTES:

Wine Rating: RP 94 points
Drink by: 2017 - 2040

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2011 from Bruno Clair has a very succinct bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and a deft touch of bergamot that is detailed and focused.
The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins and very well-judged acidity that keeps the whole thing tense and poised. This feels natural and refined with wonderful poise and grace on the delineated finish. There is some oak to be fully absorbed here, but the class shows through.

Bruno Clair is the grandson of Joseph Clair, of the famous Domaine Clair Daü. He founded his domaine in 1979 in Marsannay and subsequently inherited some of his ancestor’s plots. It is an exclusively family farm which today has 25 hectares.

The vineyard is made up of a myriad of high-quality plots, notably in Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis where the wines are among the most popular in the appellation, both white and red.

Two-thirds of the Chambertin-Clos de Bèzes Grand cru vines date back to 1912 with the remainder planted in 1972. This is an exceptional wine even by the standards of this great vineyard and will repay significant ageing.

The Clair blocks are in the middle of the vineyard with the rows running from top to bottom. The quality of the élevage and the precision of the vinification show the best of these terroirs. One of the best domaines in Burgundy.
